A beautiful smile is a lifelong process, but for many people, it truly starts with braces – and most patients get braces during adolescence.
Why Do Teenagers Get Braces?
Braces are so common for teenagers that they've become something of a rite of passage, symbolizing many of the changes that teenagers go through in their adolescent years. But it turns out there are more than symbolic reasons that teenagers get braces!
The teen years provide something of a golden window for correcting teeth and creating a beautiful lifelong smile. For one, most or all of the permanent teeth have grown in by adolescence, allowing the changes we make to the smile to be permanent. Additionally, adolescents are in a time of intense growth – and we can take advantage of those growth spurts to move teeth faster and decrease treatment times. The bones of the face and jaws are also less fully formed during adolescence, allowing us to make large changes to the appearance and function of the smile that would be much more difficult later in life. Finally, braces are so normal for teenagers that it's the ideal time for treatment – in fact, many teenagers want braces just to fit in with their friends!
Orthodontic Treatment Process & Options
The entire process begins with the initial appointment. During this visit, we'll take pictures and x-ray images of the teeth, bite, and smile, and we'll often create an impression – a physical model – of the bite. We'll use the data we gather in this examination to spot any orthodontic problems, form a diagnosis, and recommend a treatment plan. We offer a variety of treatment methods at our office, and we'll work with you to decide on the perfect treatment for your unique smile and lifestyle:
Metal Braces: These are what most people think of when they hear the words "orthodontic treatment." While these were once clunky metal strips, modern braces are thinner, lighter, and more aesthetically appealing than ever. We can even customize the color of your elastic ties, letting you choose braces that match your sense of style.
Clear Braces: These work much the same as metal braces, with one key difference: the brackets are
made of a clear ceramic composite that blends in with teeth. This means they're more aesthetically appealing than traditional braces, but they're also more fragile and slightly more costly.
Invisalign: Invisalign does away with brackets and wires entirely, instead relying on a series of clear, removable plastic aligners to straighten the teeth. The aligners are virtually invisible when worn and easy to pop in and out, meaning that no one has to know you're
straightening your teeth, you can still enjoy your favorite foods, and maintaining oral hygiene is as easy as ever – three major benefits for teenagers!
Invisalign Teen: Invisalign Teen comes with all the advantages of Invisalign along with extra features custom-made for the teenage lifestyle.
Lingual Braces: These work the same as metal braces, but the brackets are mounted to the inside (tongue side) of the teeth – so they're truly invisible! While they're the only truly invisible option, they're also more expensive and take longer to get used to than traditional braces.
In cases where we need to create major tooth or jaw movement, we may recommend other orthodontic appliances ranging from small devices mounted on the inside of the mouth to external headgear. Don't worry, though: it's all temporary and you'll get used to them – and when you're finished, you'll have a beautiful s
mile for the rest of your life.
How Long Does Orthodontic Treatment Take?
Treatment times vary greatly from patient to patient, and it all depends on the extent of treatment you require. While there's no one answer for everyone, you can expect your treatment to last somewhere between 6 and 30 months. Once you're done with the active phase of treatment, you'll need to wear a retainer for several more months – but once you're finished, your new smile will last a lifetime!
