Pediatric Dentistry

At Katy Kids Dentist, it’s our goal to put your child on a path towards a healthy smile for life. As your trusted Katy, Texas dentist for kids, Dr. R. W. Hollenberg and the rest of the staff are proud to offer a large selection of pediatric dentistry treatments in order to give your child the best dental care possible. A lifetime of healthy smiles will begin with a child’s primary (baby) teeth and we want to give you some helpful advice on how to best take care of them.

The Importance of Primary Teeth

While many people may believe that primary teeth aren’t as important as permanent teeth becKids developing jaws and teeth.ause they’ll soon fall out, primary teeth actually play a critical role for your child in the following ways:

  • Primary teeth serve as the guides for the eruption of your child’s permanent teeth. These primary teeth hold the spots open for the permanent teeth. Primary teeth fall out naturally when permanent teeth push against their roots. If primary teeth fall out early, the permanent teeth may shift into a more unfavorable position.

  • Your child’s primary teeth will help him or her with the important tasks of speaking clearly and chewing properly throughout the entirety of childhood.

  • Taking proper care of primary teeth will help build healthy dental habits for when the permanent teeth come in.

Your Child’s First Teeth

Kids mouth anatomy.

Your child’s 20 primary teeth will typically appear between the first six and nine mont

hs of age. The first to erupt tend to be the two lower front teeth, followed by the two upper ones. After that, the first molars will come in, followed by the canines. If your baby experiences any teething discomfort during this process, please let us know and

we’ll advise you on what the best course of action would be.

To clean your infant’s gums and newly erupted teeth, you should gently wipe them with a water-soaked gauze pad or damp washcloth after each feeding. By the age of two, it’ll be time to establish a daily brushing routine for your child. We recommend using a small, soft-bristled toothbrush and just a thin smear of fluoridated toothpaste. You may need to help your child with this until the age of six.

Your Child’s First Dental Appointment

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that you bring your child in to see a dentist for kids by his or her first birthday. When you come to see us during this time, we can check for cavities, watch for developmental problems, and teach you proper oral hygiene techniques. Most importantly, Dr. Hollenberg and the rest of the staff here at Katy Kids Dentist want to make sure that your child has a positive experience with us and becomes aware and accepting of all the benefits that pediatric dentistry can offer.

Pediatric Dentistry Treatments

At Katy Kids Dentist, we provide a wide range of dental treatments with the goal of preventing children’s tooth decay and repairing or saving teeth when necessary. Some of these pediatric dentistry treatments include:

  • Topical Fluoride – This will incorporate into the enamel of teeth, making a patient’s teeth harder and more resistant to decay. While fluoride exists in toothpaste and drinking water, it’s only there in small quantities. In our Katy, Texas office, we can apply a higher concentration on your child’s teeth in order to achieve optimal protection.
  • Dental Sealants – Sealants are plastic coatings that are applied to the back teeth’s chewing surfaces. We’ll apply these coatings because the small crevices on the back teeth are perfect environments for decay-causing bacteria. Sealants are easy to apply and will provide protection to teeth for years to come.
  • Root Canal Treatment – Root canal treatment is used to save a tooth that’s badly injured or severely decayed. While many people think that root canals are only used on permanent teeth, they can actually be used on primary teeth as well. Saving these primary teeth may end up preventing your child from requiring future orthodontic treatment.
  • Bonding – Bonding materials are used to repair chips and minor fractures to the front teeth. These lifelike resins that are made of plastic and glass can be used on both primary and permanent teeth.

Orthodontic Concerns

By the age of seven, most orthodonticproblems will be evident. Interceptive orthodontic treatment is useful around this time because we can help direct proper tooth positioning and jaw growth in order to simplify, or even eliminate, the need for later treatment. Many orthodontic problems can be identified early, which is why you should have a trained professional evaluate your child at around this time.
